Background
ONE RED FLOWER is a musical play inspired by the book, Dear America:
Letters Home From Vietnam. While expressing the tender emotions of
a soldier's life during war, it uses actual letters written by Vietnam War
soldiers and their loved ones.
Character Descriptions:
Specialist Fourth Class Billy "Spanky" Bridges: (18-25) the most tragic character of them all. Range- F# (below middle C) to high A# (lower range only used once in passing, and could survive without, but higher register is a must)
Eleanor Bridges: (45-60) Billy's mother. Is a sharp reminder of the normal world the men have left behind. Range- A (just below middle C) to high F
First Lieutenant Kenny Rutherford: African-American (18-25) He is very loyal to his men. Range- G (just below middle C) to high F#
Sergeant George McDuffy: (18-25) Baptist from Memphis, Tennessee . He is
a redneck solider who keeps up a brave, wisecracking front. Range- A# (just
below middle C) to high G#
Warrant Officer Michael Sandberg: (18-25) A likable helicopter pilot who helps Billy adjust to the war's stresses. Range- A# (just below middle C) to high A#
Private First Class Alan Chisholm: (18-25) He is taken prisoner of war. He projects sympathy and pity, as his body and spirit deteriorate. Range- A# (just below middle C) to high A
Specialist Fifth Class Marion Johnson: (18-25) George's opposite, he is a medic who sees the war's gory truth early on. He delivers some of the play's best lines. Range- A# (just below middle C) to high G
